Shower waterproofing & preparation

What's underneath the tile matters most.

A tiled shower is only as good as what's beneath it. Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own, so how a shower performs over time depends on the preparation and waterproofing behind the finish.

  • Substrate preparation

    Walls and floors are checked for flatness, plumb and stability, and corrected before tiling begins.

  • Backer boards & installation systems

    Suitable backer boards and installation systems are used in wet areas instead of standard drywall.

  • Waterproofing membranes

    Showers are waterproofed with membrane systems, such as Schluter KERDI where applicable, installed following the manufacturer's instructions at seams, corners and penetrations.

  • Shower bases & drainage

    The base is prepared around the drain, linear or point, so water is directed where it should go.

  • Sloped mortar beds

    Where a mortar bed is used, it is formed with a consistent slope toward the drain.

  • Finishing details

    Corners, niches, transitions and movement joints are finished carefully, because small details affect how a shower holds up.
